Like wine and cheese...

The two soft-spoken moderate ex-Brits go at it:
A more civil discussion of this matter has never been had.

Pretty good stuff, I watched all of it over on the Daily Dish. I don't think you can call Hitchens a moderate though...

Well what would you call him? He's neither liberal nor conservative nor libertarian.

I agree that Hitchens defies categorization. He swings between extremes -- from Trotskyite to neoconservative (he objects to being called that, but I think it is a fair characterization). Hitchens is, in the end, nothing but Hitchens.

But mostly, I just meant that he does very little in moderation. He is a militant atheist, a militant drinker, a militant smoker, a militant journalist, a militant invader. It is not in his personality to be lukewarm about anything. It serves him well at times, but recently, if you read his articles in Slate, he is increasingly flirting with incoherence -- militantly, as always.
